“한국어 교육을 넘어 한국의 다정한 이웃으로”... 예원예술대 김민아 교수, 외국인 유학생들의 가교 역할 ‘화제’

예원예술대학교(총장 고광모)에서 외국인 유학생들을 가르치고 있는 김민아 교수가 언어 교육을 넘어 유학생들의 한국 생활 전반을 돕는 ‘친절한 가이드’이자 ‘다정한 친구’로 활동하며 지역 사회에 귀감이 되고 있다.

전주MBC ‘다정다감’(2026.01.04 방영)을 통해 소개된 김민아 교수는 지난 2023년부터 베트남, 우즈베키스탄, 몽골 등 다양한 국가에서 온 유학생들을 대상으로 기초 한국어 수업을 진행하고 있다

김 교수는 단순히 교과서적인 한국어를 가르치는 것에 그치지 않고, 낯선 타국 생활에서 유학생들이 겪는 문화적 장벽과 어려움을 세심히 살피는 ‘눈높이 교육’으로 큰 호응을 얻고 있다.

김 교수가 유학생들에게 이토록 깊은 애정을 쏟는 배경에는 본인의 경험이 자리하고 있다. 대학 시절 중국 교환학생과 캐나다 유학 생활을 거치며 이방인으로서 느꼈던 고충을 누구보다 잘 알기 때문이다 김 교수는 당시 자신이 느꼈던 즐거움과 어려움을 바탕으로, 한국을 찾은 유학생들에게 실질적인 도움을 주고자 호텔 경영학 전공 이후 대학원에서 한국어 교육을 전공하며 전문성을 쌓았다

강의실 밖에서도 김 교수의 활동은 멈추지 않는다. 유학생 커뮤니티를 직접 결성해 한국 문화 체험을 돕는 것은 물론 , 기숙사 생활을 마친 학생들을 위해 외국인 전용 셰어하우스를 직접 찾아가 소개해주고 , 명절에는 집으로 초대해 한국 음식을 나누는 등 유학생들의 정착을 위해 헌신하고 있다 .

또한, 전북특별자치도 기자단으로 활동하며 유학생들의 목소리를 지역 사회에 전달하고 있으며 , 개인 유튜브 채널을 통해 유학생들이 느끼는 한국 문화의 차이를 흥미롭게 풀어내는 등 인식 개선에도 앞장서고 있다 .

김민아 교수는 “유학생들이 단순히 한국어만 배우는 것이 아니라, 이 지역의 문화와 생활 방식을 익히며 한국을 더 사랑하게 되길 바란다”며, “앞으로도 유학생들이 한국에서 빛나는 꿈을 펼칠 수 있도록 돕는 다정한 선생님이자 든든한 가교 역할을 이어가고 싶다”고 포부를 밝혔다

Professor Min-ah Kim, who teaches international students at Yewon Arts University, is gaining significant recognition for her role as a "kind guide" and "devoted friend" to the foreign student community. Her efforts go beyond simple language instruction, helping students navigate all aspects of life in Korea.

Featured on Jeonju MBC’s "Dajeong Dagam" (aired Jan 4, 2026), Professor Kim has been leading basic Korean language courses since 2023 for students from various countries, including Vietnam, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia. Rather than sticking strictly to textbook Korean, she is known for her "eye-level education," which carefully addresses the cultural barriers and hardships students face in a foreign land.

Professor Kim’s deep affection for her students is rooted in her own experiences. Having studied abroad in China and Canada during her college years, she understands the challenges of being a foreigner. Based on the joys and difficulties she encountered, she pursued a master’s degree in Korean Language Education after her initial studies in Hotel Management, seeking to provide professional and practical help to students arriving in Korea.

Her dedication extends far beyond the classroom. Professor Kim established an international student community to facilitate Korean cultural experiences and personally assists students who have completed their dormitory stays by finding and introducing them to specialized shared housing. She even invites students to her home during traditional holidays to share Korean meals, acting as a pillar of support for their settlement.

Furthermore, she serves as a member of the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing State Press Corps, conveying the voices of international students to the local community. Through her personal YouTube channel, she shares interesting stories about cultural differences, leading the way in improving public perception of foreign residents.

"I hope my students don't just learn the language, but also come to love Korea by learning the local culture and lifestyle," said Professor Kim. "I want to continue being a compassionate mentor and a sturdy bridge that helps international students achieve their bright dreams in Korea."
